I've read a lot of questions lately about the Wolf Link Companion, Epona and Amiibo in general, and I thought it would be useful to have all information bundled in once place. Please be aware that this post will most likely contain spoilers. Some quick information about Amiibo in general:.Every Amiibo is compatible with BotW, even those from totaly different games like Smash Bros and Animal Crossing.
Star Stable is a horse game online filled with adventures. Ride and take care of your own horses and explore the exciting island of Jorvik. Try the game for free! Read Star Stable reviews from parents on Common Sense Media. I am 29 and have played Star Stable for years so I have experience on the game. Now, she's 14 and star stable keeps closing her chat for no reason and giving her warnings. When I unlocked Epona (a part on the map where you have to be level 17 to.
The only difference is, that the Zelda-related amiibo will give you treasure chests and Zelda-related items plus a handful of foodstuff, while every non-Zelda Amiibo will only give you a handful of random foodstuff and no chests.Amiibo Cards work just like the original Amiibo would. They are, however, not official merchandise, e.g. Not licensed by Nintendo. Owning them is not illegal and as far as I know, Nintendo doesn't care, but in the end it's really just up to you if you want a cheap knockoff set of all 22 Zelda Amiibo cards for under 20 dollar or rather buy the official merchandise for 15-80 dollar per Amiibo and have a cool collectible figurine. (If you want a knockoff set, just search for 'NFC Zelda' on ebay or amazon.).(It is also possible to buy empty NFC tags and make your own Amiibo, but explaining how this works would be slightly off-topic.).If you want to use Amiibo in BotW, you will have to get the Sheika Slate and at least one rune first.
You will also have to manually activate Amiibo usage in the options menu for whatever reason, otherwise the 'Amiibo Rune' won't show up on your Sheika Slate.Savescumming works. If you want a particular drop, for example one of the Amiibo exclusive costumes, then save your game, use the respective Amiibo, and if you didn't get what you wanted, load the save file and scan the same Amiibo again. Otherwise you will only be able to scan every Amiibo 'once per day'. (Edit: This means if you scan an Amiibo at 23:59 you can scan the same Amiibo again at 00:01 for another drop. You don't have to wait 24 hours, just until midnight has passed. Thanks to for that addition)(Edit 2: You can also change the time and date of the Switch console in the system settings to trick the game into thinking a day has passed. This way you should be able to get multiple drops from the same Amiibo in one day.
Thanks to for that tip). The 'Amiibo exclusive' weapons, shields and bows do not count towards the Hyrule Compendium. If you take a picture of any of those weapons, it won't register.Amiibo weapons will still break eventually, just like any other weapon would. But you can always get more if you just keep scanning your Amiibo. There are 22 Zelda-related Amiibo on the market right now, most of which will spawn a treasure chest and a handful of random other drops like food, rupees and arrows. The items you can obtain will get better, the farther you have progressed into the story. Most of the exclusive items are only obtaineable after you have cleared at least one Divine Beast and even then the chance to actually get them is pretty low.
It is also possible to get the same rare item multiple times. For information about the Amiibo exclusive items, I'd like to refer to which has it neatly bundled in one place. It may be old, but it is still up to date, since nothing has changed about the Amiibo items in the last 7 months.About Epona:.If you want Epona, you will have to scan the Smash Bros Link or the Twilight Princess Link.
The Rider Link does NOT spawn Epona, but instead can give you the Travelers Saddle and Bridle which are purely cosmetic. The 'first time' you scan the Amiibo, Epona is supposed to show up 100%, but there seem to be other requirenments as well. Some people reported that Epona didn't show up on the first scan while they were still on the Great Plateau, and even if you could summon her there, there is no way of registering/keeping her because there is no stable there. I'd strongly suggest waiting until you have reached your first stable in the game before trying to scan the Amiibo. If you somehow mess up your first scan, Epona gets killed or despawned before you could reach a stable, or you simply forgot to register her, then Epona is still not lost.
After the second time you scan the Amiibo you will still have a very low chance of getting her again instead of a treasure chest. Savescumming works for this, too.Despite that rumor floating around the internet since the release of BotW, Epona does NOT have the 'best stats' in the game. She will always have a 4/4/4 stat spread, whereas you can catch 4/4/5 horses in Upland Lindor and Taobab Grasslands.
It is also possible to get 2/5/3 or 5/3/5 horses there. The only differences are that Epona has a 'gentle' temperament, so she doesn't throw you off when you want to make her gallop without spurs left, and that her spur time is half a second longer than that of regular horses. Which doesn't really make a difference, to be honest. You can not customize Epona at all. She will come with her own unique saddle and bridle, but you can't take them off her and put them on another horse. You can not equip her with another saddle and bridle. You can not change her mane style.
The stablehand also won't let you give her another name than 'Epona'.This also means Epona will never get any armor boosts. Every other horse is able to equip the Ancient Bridle for extra spurs or the Ancient Saddle for the ability to teleport, but Epona just can't. At least she can eat Endura Carrots for some temporary extra spurs like every other horse, but that's it.It is possible to get multiple Eponas if you have multiple Amiibo, but once you have registered Epona, the Amiibo you got her from won't spawn her again until you release her.Regarding everything else, Epona works just like any other horse would. If you have registered her and she gets killed, Malanya will revive her. She will get spooked by Keese and fire and falling rocks, just like any other horse would. She does the same amount of damage while gallopping over enemies and can jump just as high.
You can also sell her to that one guy who wants a 'good sized horse' for his sidequest.About Wolf Link:.You will need the Wolf Link Amiibo to summon a Wolf Compantion in BotW. You don't need to register or tame him - he will be friendly towards you right from the start. The Amiibo is also the ONLY way to get him - he is not part of the DLC or obtaineable in the vanilla game through other means. If you get a NEW Amiibo, he will most likely only have 3 heart containers when you summon him, and there sadly is no way of raising that heart maximum in BotW alone.
You can't give him heart containers, and there is no sidequest to make him 'healthier'. Food Buffs also don't work on him, so even if you feed him Hearty Food he will still not get yellow hearts. The Nintendo-intended way (nintended?) to get a 20-heart Wolf Link is overly complicated, time-consuming and requires you to buy/own a completely different game and most likely also the console for it. You will have to play Twilight Princess HD (the remake, not the original TP) on the Wii U, collect ALL of the heart containers, unlock the 'Cave of Shadows' (a dungeon only availiable in the remake) and clear that rather difficult dungeon at full health in one go, because you can't save there. Then you save that game file to your Amiibo, and the next time you summon your Wolf Companion in BotW he will have 20 hearts.
If you cleared the Cave of Shadows with less health, the BotW Wolf Link will only have the amount of hearts you had when you cleared the dungeon in TP.Most knockoff card sets already include a 20 heart Wolf Link. If you are unsure, just ask the seller how many hearts the card has.You can summon Wolf Link as many times as you want. There is no limit and no timer.Even if you have multiple Amiibo, you will only be able to summon one Wolf Link at a time. (Thanks to for checking). If he dies however, you will either have to reload an older save file when he was still alive or wait until the next day (real days, not in-game days) before you can summon him again. Again, this means not 24 hours, but 'until midnight has passed', so if he dies at 23:55 you'll only have to wait 5-6 minutes before you can get him back alive. There are areas where he can't follow you, like the inside of shrines and the Divine Beasts, but also towns, the open sea and Eventide Island. If you go to these places, he will despawn and you can not summon him again while you are in that area. After you have left that particular area, you CAN summon him again, though.
You will also have re-summon him each time you teleported, loaded a save file and after certain cutscenes.Wolf Link CAN follow you into the Lost Woods (but not into Korok Forest, because that counts as 'town area'), the Hebra Mountains and Eldin Volcano. Wolf Link is immune to environemental damage, meaning he does not catch fire on the volcano or loses health in a blizzard.
He is, however, not immune to elemental attacks, so the fire breath of a Red Lizalfos will still hurt him. He is also not immune to friendly fire, so be careful with that bomb arrows. He will attack everything that is bigger than a squirrel.
He will hunt for you, kill wildlife and enemies alike, and you can just pick up the meat and loot afterwards. He will also attack 'hidden' enemies like Treasure Chest Octoroks and camouflaged Lizalfos you might have not seen yet.and while this is incredibly useful at the beginning of the game, it becomes a hassle in the endgame, because he WILL try to attack Silver Lynels, Guardian Stalkers and an entire camp of golden Bokoblins, and he WILL get bludgeoned to death if you can't get him out of there fast enough. His defense is rather poor and like I mentioned earlier, you cannot put any food buffs on him, so you can't raise his defense or attack.
He will also attack Taluses and Pebblits, despite not being able to deal actual damage to them. You can heal him by dropping food on the ground. He will eat it and regenereate health. Cooked food heals him more than raw food, but since you can not actually drop cooked food, you will have to tell Wolf Link to 'stay', drop raw food on the ground, incinerate it and then tell Wolf Link to 'follow' once the food is nice and crispy. He will patiently wait until you have prepared his meal and then eat it.If you don't actively feed him, he will just eat anything else he can find. But that also means he'll devour things like Big Hearty Radishes and Stamella Shrooms for a little bit of health and no other benefits, so I'd suggest feeding him on time.Wolf Link will try to show you the most convenient way to the next Shrine once you get near enough to set the sensor off. This only works if you have set the Sheika Sensor to search for Shrines.
If you have set the Sheika Sensor+ to anything else, Wolf Link will try to lead you to the thing you are searching for.He is dumb as a doorknob. Despite all this other neat little useful things he does, his AI is rather stupid. He will stand in your way. Preferably whenever you carry something heavy and/or dangerous. He will regularily walk off cliffs and bridges, jump into water despite not being able to swim or launch himself in front of your bomb arrows.
His attention span is short as a fuse - if he is currently trying to show you the way to a shrine and there happens to be a bird somewhere, he'll go chasing that bird first even if he is not hungry. He will also not refrain from attacking wildlife just because you want to take a good picture of it. My Hyrule Compendium is chock full of images of Wolf Links butt with a flailing, dying or fleeing animal barely visible behind it.You can also kiss your stealth goodbye.
Even if Link is wearing the Sheika armor and has a stealthy food buff, the chain on Wolf Links paw will make enough noise to alert enemies to your presence, chase critters and horses away and wake up sleeping Bokoblins. If i missed something, please let me know. I will also try to answer all questions to the best of my knowledge. SPOILER.
Is there a way to get rid of wolf link? The easiest way to make him despawn is to enter a shrine or village. You can also save and reload. In both cases he will 'go back to his own world', as the game tells you, and not appear again until you actively scan the Amiibo again. And if wolf link dies, will he keep his 20 hearts or will he go back to 3?Once you have unlocked a 20 heart Wolf Link and don't overwrite the save file stored on the amiibo, he will always have 20 hearts max even if he died. 24 hour cooldownIt's only until the 'next day', so if he dies at 23:55 you'll only have to wait for 5-6 minutes before you can summon him again. As for the cooldown.this seems to be tied to the game, not to the amiibo. I just tested it: If I summon one Wolf Link and it dies, I'm not able to summon another Wolf Link from another amiibo again. (The game tells me 'You can't use that amiibo again today' even though I'm actually scanning another amiibo. It doesn't seem to matter if I scan the card or the actual amiibo first).
